CORBYN No1 PICK FOR PM
He overtakes May for first time and vows to force poll
JEREMY Corbyn has overtaken Theresa May for the first time in a survey asking who would make the best Prime Minister.
And the Labour leader, who doesn’t normally comment on polls, told the Mirror he would try to force an early general election.
Speaking ahead of a lightning visit to Glastonbury, he added: “We are ready for another election at any time to finish the job of beating the failed and clapped-out Tories.”
A YouGov poll of 1,670 voters found 35% thought he would make the best PM. Mrs May was a point behind while 30% were unsure. When the election was called in April, the Tories were more than 20 points ahead. And on the eve of the poll, 43% favoured Mrs May with only 32% opting for Mr Corbyn. The Labour leader said the idea Mrs May’s minority government could stay in power was “ludicrous.” And he promised: “We will challenge them at every step and try to force an early election. Theresa May and the Tories are clinging to power by the skin of their teeth. People know that privatisation has failed, that austerity has failed.
“From Hillsborough to the child sex abuse scandal to Grenfell Tower, the pattern is clear. Working-class voices are ignored by the powerful and their concerns are dismissed.”
Later Unison member Mr Corbyn won a standing ovation at the union’s conference in Brighton, when he repeated Labour’s commitment to scrap the public sector pay cap.
Today he will address the Glastonbury crowd from the Pyramid stage and introduce rappers Run the Jewels.
