Grooming story ends with bravery in court
BETHANY Platt’s grooming ordeal in Coronation Street will have a positive ending to inspire real-life victims to escape their abusers.
The troubled teen, played by Lucy Fallon, 21, has finally realised that evil Nathan Curtis has been selling her for sex and does not love her.
By the end of summer, she will agree to go to court and give evidence against him as she “takes some power back”.
Corrie boss Kate Oates said: “I want to keep Lucy central to the show, as she has shone through this. We have some plans. What is nice about where this storyline goes is that when the scales do fall from Bethany’s eyes, and she does realise it’s not right, she takes some power back.
“We see Bethany being active in saving herself rather than just being told. It’s a story for feminists – I wanted her to take some of that power back.”
A source on the ITV soap added: “She still finds it a huge thing after believing he loved her. Her evidence and whether she can cope is crucial to whether Nathan ends up in prison.” This week, viewers saw Bethany narrowly escape being sold and sent to Belgium.
Chris Harper, who plays the fiend, said: “People talk about street justice but that’s not the message we’re trying to get across.
“With the inquiry into child sex abuse through the Truth Project, there’s a real initiative to start looking at how institutions like the police and social services look after people who have suffered abuse. It’s through that journey we will really see Nathan suffer.
“We don’t need to see him beaten up, that doesn’t achieve anything. We need to see the law come down on him like a ton of bricks.”
