EAGLES IS GROUNDED BY BREAK

- BY DAVID YATES.

SHOCK Derby winner Wings Of Eagles has run his last race.

Trainer Aidan O’Brien yesterday revealed the news after it was discovered the colt broke a bone in his ankle when third in the Irish version on Saturday.

“He pulled out very sore this morning,” O’Brien revealed of the 40-1 Epsom winner, beaten a neck and a short head by stablemate Capri at the Curragh.

“When the vets X-rayed him, his sesamoid had completely come apart it’s incredible he ran the race he did, but there was absolutely no chance that he’d ever race again.

“We’re very sorry to lose him because he was an unusual horse in that he stayed very well and quickened very well.

“We were saying he was a perfect horse to have a mid-season break and then give him a prep for the Arc - that’s the type of horse we thought he was going to be.”

O’Brien also cast doubt over whether his seventime Group 1 heroine Minding will ever see a racecourse again.

Last year’s 1,000 Guineas and Oaks heroine suffered an injury after her victorious reappearance in the Mooresbridge Stakes at Naas in May.

Minding had been due to return to training today, but will remain on the sidelines on the advice of vet John Halley.

HAYLEY TURNER warms up for her rides at the Lady Jockeys’ World Championship in Sweden tomorrow with a return to the saddle at Windsor this evening.

Britain’s most successful woman rider, who rode at last year’s Shergar Cup, partners Flying Sparkle (6.00) for Michael Bell.
