BETTS BACKS YOUTH AND EXPERIENCE
DENIS BETTS has hailed the permanent signing of Rangi Chase and long-term deal for teenager Danny Walker as a “statement of intent” by Widnes.
Chase, a former England international and 2011 Man of Steel, agreed a two-year contract after impressing while on loan from Castleford.
Hooker Walker – who made his debut this season aged 17 – signed the longest deal in the club’s Super League history, committing until the end of 2021.
“Rangi’s made a big impact since his arrival, contributing well both on and off the field,” said Vikings coach Betts. “He has exceptional abilities and, as an international-standard half-back, adds real quality to the team.
”Danny is one of the most promising young players in the Super League. His commitment to a four-year contract shows his belief in what we are building at the Vikings.
“The deals represent a real statement of intent.”
Chase, 31, who has flourished with the Vikings after leaving Castleford following two off-field incidents this season, believes they are well placed to progress after struggling with injuries and consistency for much of this year. He said: “I like to win and I want to help the club grow.
“We’ve potential, and when we get our team fit we’ve always been a threat. Hopefully by signing myself and blokes like Danny we can kick on.
“I’m at the back end of my career and he’s at the beginning, but hopefully I can help nurture the young players and make them better.
“Since day one I’ve been welcomed with open arms and the fans have been awesome as well. When the opportunity came up to sign it was easy.”
