Nev tells Lukaku he has to quickly fulfil his potential and deliver on football’s biggest stage

ROMELU LUKAKU has been told: Now it is time to deliver.

Jose Mourinho has put his faith in Lukaku to fire Manchester United to glory after choosing to make the Belgian his big striker signing of the summer ahead of Real Madrid’s Alvaro Morata.

United are tomorrow set for a first look at what they paid Everton £75million for, with Lukaku in line to make his debut against LA Galaxy in the early hours of the morning.

And former United and Everton defender Phil Neville said: “They have signed a player with vast potential, who has a lot to prove probably.

“Sometimes when you spend big money you get the finished article, but with both £89m Paul Pogba and Lukaku, United haven’t – they got players who have a lot to prove.

“They are buying someone who scores goals in this league, that’s guaranteed. Romelu has scored goals in the last four seasons, for West Brom and Everton. But they’re also buying someone who has the ability to improve and needs to show it on a bigger stage. Well he is now playing on the biggest stage and it is time to deliver.”

Lukaku (right in the kits of West Brom, Everton and Belgium) has had a quick introduction to the increased scrutiny he will be under following his mega-money move.

His huge price tag will lead to inevitable, added attention. While a video, allegedly of his first training session, going viral this week is also perhaps a sign of things to come.

Neville knows all about the spotlight on United players after 10 years in their first team having come through the ranks before joining Everton in 2005.

And speaking at the inaugural Star Sixes tournament at the O2 Neville said: “What he will realise is he has left a great club in Everton. I played there for eight years.

“But he has gone to United now and the scrutiny will be there on and off the pitch.

“How he portrays himself on social media, what he does on the training ground – we saw earlier in the week one bad pass in training and the press were poking fun at him. “That is the scrutiny he’s under, he’s playing for a club where the pressure is probably greater than ever, far greater than when I played. “Also the expectation level is far greater than when I played and the pressure is, definitely. He has been bought to win the Premier League for Manchester United.

“They have not done it since Sir Alex Ferguson left, so every year that goes by that is more pressure added to the players there.

“They had a brilliant season last year but ultimately the Premier League is the be-all and end-all.”

Mourinho also added £31m defender Victor Lindelof to his squad this summer and Neville (above) added: “I don’t think that will be it, there are probably two or three more players Jose wants.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if they signed another centreforward because goals last season probably cost them challenging for the Premier League.”
