‘May is taking economy off a cliff’

DAVID Davis’s ex-chief of staff has warned the “failing” Conservative Party they will never win another election after making a mess of Brexit.

Former top aide James Chapman said his party was “not fit for office”.

He claimed he had spoken to two Tory Cabinet Ministers who sympathised with his plan to set up a new anti-Brexit party. Mr Chapman told the BBC: “The Conservative brand has been damaged to such an extent that the party won’t... ever again get a majority.

“The hard Brexit plan that Mrs May is pursuing is going to take our economy off a cliff.”

Mr Chapman was formerly political editor of the pro-Brexit Daily Mail before becoming George Osborne’s top spin doctor in 2015.

He has since joined a PR firm, and this week said Brexit was going to be a “catastrophe”. He added yesterday: “I’ve seen it from the inside – and Brexit is going to be the worst calamity for UK since WW2.” Mr Chapman wants to establish a new centre-ground political party called The Democrats.

“The two main parties have been captured by the fringes,” he said. On Twitter, Mr Chapman savaged his replacement at the Brexit department, former Tory MP Stewart Jackson. He described him as “Wacko Jacko” and used the hashtag #thickasmince.

Mr Chapman added: “From what I hear, half of [the Brexit department] is threatening to quit unless DD [David Davis] gets rid of him. Even [hardline Brexit Minister] Steve Baker told DD hiring Wacko was a bad idea.”

Brexit supporters hit back at Mr Chapman, and right-wing pro-Brexit blog Guido Fawkes posted a naked picture of him. Mr Chapman said: “The relationship with the disgusting @GuidoFawkes is another reason they are not fit for office.”
