Conte joy as Alonso & his warriors spoil the Wembley party for rattled rivals Spurs

- BY DARREN LEWIS

ANTONIO CONTE hailed his Chelsea warriors for summoning a champions’ display to see off Tottenham.

Marcos Alonso’s 88th-minute winner (right) clinched all three points for the injury and suspension-hit Blues.

It also ensured a miserable start to Spurs’ season at Wembley.

Conte, whose men defied the doubters to lift last season’s title, said: “I’m very happy when I see this type of game.

“I’m not speaking about football, but about this spirit, this heart, this desire. They did the same

last season.” The manager was without suspended pair Gary Cahill and Cesc Fabregas, while Eden Hazard is still injured.

But £40million Tiemoue Bakayoko played all 90 minutes on his debut.

Conte said: “I saw today the fighters and a lot of positive things in a moment that’s not easy for us with the injuries and suspensions.” Conte laughed off the Manchester clubs’ impressive starts to the season, saying: “It’s not important if we are not favourites in this league. It was the same last season.

“We know we are trying to improve our team, our squad. For us, it’s very important that we focus only on ourselves.”

He also claimed every team will enjoy playing at Wembley and added: “All opponents will find this stadium amazing. Despite 70,000 Tottenham supporters, it is great for opponents.”

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino said: “We created more chances but they were clinical in front of goal.”
