OWLS GET A LEG UP FROM FLETCHER

- BY HECTOR NUNNS

A PATCHED-UP Steven Fletcher and his “skinny legs” were still good enough to see off Fulham.

The Scotland striker earned Carlos Carvalhal’s Sheffield Wednesday a vital first league win of the season with a superb volley.

And after kick-starting the Owls’ campaign, Fletcher hailed the club physios who worked on his knee problem.

Fletcher said: “I have this niggling injury and have carried it for a while now. I have got my head round what it is and just have to manage it.

“The gaffer and the physios are helping with that and I finished as close to 90 minutes as I could.

“If we all manage it properly, then I should be fine to play and available for every game.

“But I need to strengthen up my legs – I have skinny legs, my wife tells me that all the time – so if I do the strength work I should be fine.

“The new physios have done great since they came in. I have been working on an intense programme.

“It is a statement coming here and beating Fulham. We didn’t listen to the criticism before this win, we have been playing OK.

“For the goal, I just remember Adam Reach getting down the line and I was screaming for a cut-back. He told me he never heard me – but played the right ball. And I caught it really sweet.”

The Cottagers are themselves without a league win this term, but defender Denis Odoi insisted: “It is still early days, we don’t need to be desperate.”
