CORRIE legend Liz Dawn is being spurred back to health by the prospect of seeing her newest great-grandchild.

The 77-year-old telly favourite, who played Vera Duckworth in the ITV soap, is in hospital after being taken ill suddenly.

Liz, a former heavy smoker, was admitted with chest pains and a build-up of lung fluid.

She was in a critical condition for days – but has now come back fighting after receiving the news that her third greatgrandchild has arrived.

The baby boy was born last week to Liz’s grandson, Luke Ibbotson, and his wife Nicola.

Doctors ruled over the weekend that Liz was strong enough to be moved to a special ward where she can receive crucial oxygen treatment.

Family and friends have rallied round to keep a bedside vigil and Liz has been buoyed by get-well wishes from current Corrie stars including Samia Ghadie and Alan Halsall.

A pal said: “Liz has had a very traumatic and difficult few days but she is determined to get better to see the new baby. “She is a fighter. All her family and friends are rallying round and she is getting excellent care. “We recognise a definite improvement in Liz’s condition and her spirits are high.” Liz played Vera in Corrie for 34 years and her character had a stormy and often eventful marriage to workshy rogue Jack, played by Bill Tarmey. It is understood the star’s health took a turn for the worse after complications following a minor operation to repair a pacemaker in July. She was rushed to Manchester’s Wythenshawe Hospital nearly two weeks ago after complaining of tiredness.
