Strictly Craig: Let same-sex couples dance next year

THE BBC should allow same-sex partners on Strictly Come Dancing, says Craig Revel Horwood.

And the acid-tongued judge believes it could happen on the hit dance show next year.

Revel Horwood, 52, said: “The tango was originally danced between two men anyway. It’s powerful, explosive – and the same can happen between two women.

“There’s nothing wrong, you can get married. It’s appreciated with the community.

“It’s great to celebrate anyone’s sexuality. It’s not just about sex, it’s about dancing.

“You only have to decide who is going to go backwards. That’s the only difference.” The BBC said there are “no plans” to make the move.

But Revel Horwood added: “There is no reason why it cannot happen. The Beeb have to decide whether they want to do it. “I think it will probably happen next year. I really hope so.”

The Rev Richard Coles, a celeb on this year’s show, had “discussions” about the issue with BBC bosses.

But he has been paired to dance with professional Dianne Buswell. Coles, 55, one half of the 1980s band the Communards and now in a same-sex marriage, said: “It makes absolutely no sense that anybody resists the idea.” Fellow gay contestant Susan Calman has been criticised on social media for not having a female professional partner this year. But the comedian, 42, said she is taking part simply “to bring entertainment to people”. The new couples were paired up in Saturday’s show and are training for their first dance which will be broadcast on BBC One a week on Saturday.
