A GORILLA called Mbeli tenderly cradles her newborn son, a baby which may help keep this critically endangered species alive.

The birth brought the number of Western Lowland Gorillas at Taronga Zoo, in Sydney, Australia, to seven.

The newborn will help ensure against rapidly declining numbers of gorillas in Africa due to habitat destruction, deforestation, poaching and disease.

Primate keeper Alison Smith said: “Mbeli is a very relaxed and confident mother. In turn, the baby is getting stronger every day.”
