What to consider before having an operation

-

If you’re having an operation, here are some things you should consider beforehand.

First, you should decide with your doctor which hospital you’d like to be referred to, and which specialist will review your case.

At your first hospital appointment your consultant will carry out tests and make an assessment to decide if the surgery is right for you. You can ask the consultant questions about the operation expressing all your concerns.

After the session your operation will be booked.

Make travel arrangements for getting to and from the hospital. Give your family and friends plenty of notice so they can take time off work to accompany you if necessary.

At the pre-operative assessment you’ll be asked questions about your health, medical history and home circumstances. Some tests may also be carried out such as MRSA screening and blood tests.

You’ll be notified to stop eating and drinking before your operation if appropriate. And you’ll be told whether or not to stop taking your medications and also what to bring with you. Ask about visiting hours.

Remove all body piercings, make-up and nail polish before your operation.

The doctors will need to see your skin and nails to make sure your blood circulation is healthy.

Your admission letter from the hospital will tell you the date and time of your operation, the ward you’re going to be in, the name of your consultant and a contact number. When you arrive, you’ll be given an identity bracelet to wear during your stay in hospital.
