The best of Vera Duckworth

-

WHEN Vera was tipped off that Jack had joined a dating agency, as Vince St Clair, she set up her own profile as ginger widow Carole Monroe.

Dressed as Carole in a wig, as she laid into Jack for straying, he shouted: “You’re no flipping widow!” Vera replied: “No, but I will be 10 minutes after I get you home.”

Another great moment came when she bought a china dog from an antique shop, thinking it was the missing half of a valuable pair, to go with one she had at home.

But she went ballistic when she realised she’d bought her own ornament back, after Jack had sold it earlier to bet on a “dead cert” at the bookies. The horse lost and Vera found she’d paid £48 for the dog Jack sold for just £25. So she threw it at him in the Street.

Vera was not happy when Jack admitted he’d lied about his age at their wedding, making it invalid. To make up for it, he had to take her to Vegas to marry her again.

Vera was heartbroken when jailbird son Terry sold her grandson Tommy to the child’s other gran for £2,000.

Her 2008 death, after loving words from Jack, was topped two years later when, as Jack battled cancer, she reappeared as a ghost and the pair had one last dance.
