Portas: Time for Barbie to be a lesbian
SHOPPING guru Mary Portas has asked Barbie makers Mattel to create a lesbian version of the doll.
TV’s Queen of Shops challenged the US toy firm’s boss over a revamp that introduced seven skin tones and a Curvy Barbie.
She told vice-president Kim Culmone that Mattel should be “less hung up on body shape” and instead reflect how people live.
Portas, 57, herself gay, said: “We should be doing more lezza dolls,” referring to a one-off model made for lesbian US football star Abby Wambach.
Portas asked: “Will you put it to the board?”
Culmone replied: “I’ll see what I can do.”
The interview was for Barbie: The Most Famous Doll in the World on Channel 4 today at 9.15pm.
