DEBUCHY IN FRAME AGAIN FOR GUNNERS

- BY MIKE WALTERS

MATHIEU DEBUCHY will be handed another chance to continue his transformation from Arsenal outcast to Europa League asset tomorrow evening.

The France full-back’s Gunners career looked over at the start of 2017 when manager Arsene Wenger told him to look for another club and accused him of fabricating a blocked move to Manchester United.

But Debuchy, 32, was a surprise inclusion in Arsenal’s starting XI for the 1-0 win against Red Star Belgrade in Serbia last month.

And he is likely to feature in the return fixture at the Emirates.

Injuries to Calum Chambers and Shkodran Mustafi have opened up the door for Debuchy (above) to stake his claim once more.

And Wenger said: “We are all very pleased for him because he has been through some very difficult moments with setbacks.

“Mathieu is absolutely strong and determined as well.

“From now on, he will be a candidate to fight for the team places again.

“He’s a very quiet character, but a very strong one. I must say that he is 100 per cent a professional player.”

The Gunners do not expect any repeat of the problems they encountered with Cologne’s vast travelling contingent when Red Star’s supporters visit north London.

But crowd control and segregation at the Emirates stadium will be under the microscope, following the chaotic scenes in September when many of the 20,000 visiting Cologne fans invaded home areas.

Thousands of ticketless fans arrived and caused disruption, despite the official allocation to the German club being just 2,900.

Kick-off was delayed by an hour and Cologne have been fined £53,000 by governing body UEFA for letting off flares and fireworks inside the stadium and blocking home supporters’ access to turnstiles.

They were also ordered to pay Arsenal compensation for damage to seats and concourses.
