WEIGHT TO GO
Britain’s biggest gym chain has been snapped up by a US private equity firm.
Pure Gym, which is endorsed by Sir Chris Hoy, said Leonard Green & Partners bought a controlling stake – thought to be about 80% – for an undisclosed sum.
Pure Gym launched in 2009 and was one of the first no-frills gym chains. Its 189 branches have no pools, saunas or cafes, and its 950,000 members are not locked into long contracts.
Hoy, Britain’s most successful Olympian, has a small stake in the Leeds-based company. Leonard Green, based in LA, will buy the stake from another US buyout firm, CCMP.
