Schindler shows Terriers have defensive pedigree
MARK up another one in the plus-column for Christopher Schindler.
After outstanding performances against the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Christian Benteke and Chris Wood, the Huddersfield defender had another day to remember against Manchester City.
Back from suspension, it was no coincidence the Terriers lost 4-0 at Bournemouth without their defensive linchpin.
He did not deserve to finish on the losing side for his committed display and stood out in both boxes.
The German centre-back made a goal-saving tackle on Sergio Aguero before his deft flick in firsthalf stoppage time went in off Nicolas Otamendi for the opening goal.
Schindler sums up Huddersfield’s success under boss David Wagner, combining talent with tenacity.
It’s laughable to think in this era of huge-money buys that he cost Huddersfield just £1.8million.
Schindler (below, challenging Leroy Sane) was a rock in a backline beaten only by Sergio Aguero’s penalty and Raheem Sterling’s fortunate winner.
Wagner was proud of his side’s defending.
“I’m disappointed because of the result,” he said. “But I’m happy because of the defensive performance, because of the attitude, the desire, the passion and the emotion the players showed today.
“The players left everything on the grass. It would have made total sense to take a point from this game, to defend like this against the best team in the Premier League and the best offence in the Premier League.
“It was unfortunate they scored the penalty so early after half-time and the second goal was unlucky.”
Rajiv Van La Parra was sent off after the final whistle for grabbing Sane by the throat.
Wagner added: “I can’t say anything about the red card because I’ve not seen the video footage so far.”
