£750million showpiece for host with the most
Commonwealth Games 2022 to be held in Birmingham
BIRMINGHAM will stage the 2022 Commonwealth Games – Britain’s biggest sporting event since the Olympics.
The £750million sporting spectacular will be a huge boost to Britain’s second city, bringing fans and athletes from across the globe.
Delighted West Midlands Mayor Andy Street said: “The Games will give the opportunity to not only see world-class sport, but bring economic and social benefits.”
The Games were awarded to the South African city of Durban in 2015. But it was stripped of the honour by the Commonwealth Games Federation after failing to meet financial promises in its bid.
Birmingham stepped in and beat off Liverpool to land the event. Athletics legend Brendan Foster said: “The Games should thank their lucky stars Birmingham is the chosen venue.
“They were in such trouble with Durban. The Games were so lucky Birmingham decided to throw its hat in the ring.” There will be major investment in sports venues, transport, housing and jobs ahead of the 11 days of sport.
Athletics will be at the upgraded Alexander Stadium in Perry Barr. And the new Sandwell Aquatics Centre is to host pool events.
The Government will foot 75% of the £750million budget and Birmingham city council the rest.
Council chiefs are considering a hotel tax on visitors – the first in the UK – to help meet the bill. Manchester was the last English host for the games in 2002.
