40 YEARS AGO (1978)

South African editor and campaigner Donald Woods arrived in London after fleeing the apartheid regime. The 1987 film Cry Freedom was based on his story.

18 YEARS AGO (2000)

Fears that the Millennium or Y2K bug would cause worldwide computer meltdown proved unfounded as the tech crisis failed to materialis­e. Experts had warned that the world faced the “electronic equivalent of El Nino” but, in the event, few technical glitches were reported.
