Town’s Danish star targeting the World Cup

- BY MIKE WHALLEY

PHILIP BILLING will put his injury woes behind him and push for a place in Denmark’s World Cup squad.

The midfielder is today set to make his first Huddersfield start since October.

Billing, 21, was out for two-anda-half months after ankle surgery. That followed a knee injury last season that forced him to miss Town’s run to the Premier League via the Championship play-offs.

The Denmark Under21 star returned as a substitute in the Terriers’ third-round win at Bolton earlier this month – and is now pushing for regular games.

He said: “I’ve had a few injuries and some would probably look at me as injuryprone.

“But I know I’m not. I’ve just had some silly injuries in tackles that I shouldn’t have gone into.

“Now I’m back and I hope this could be my last injury. I just make sure I come back stronger now and help the team.”

Billing, who arrived at Huddersfield from Esbjerg at 16, now has his sights on playing for his country in Russia this summer.

Team-mates Mathias Jorgensen and Jonas Lossl are both set to be part of Denmark’s World Cup squad, but Billing has work to do.

But he has been told by centreback Jorgensen, who is nicknamed Zanka, that national boss Age Hareide is keeping an eye on him.

Billing said: “Talking with Zanka, he said the manager has been mentioning me.

“If it hadn’t been for that injury in October and I’d played the next few games, I could have been coming up for the Denmark squad.

“I’ll make sure I come back stronger now and I’m ready to get a place in the team, to be in contention for the World Cup.

“The important thing is to stay injury free and help the team.”
