Latics can’t help falling for the Cup

A DAMP, dreary Monday night in Wigan felt about as romantic as a quick fumble behind a bus shelter.

But don’t try telling that to Latics fans as they continued their love affair with the Cup.

Even though nearly everyone who was at Wigan for their historic 2013 FA Cup Final win has gone, the memories will never fade.

Standing proudly outside the DW Stadium is the statue of owner Dave Whelan, holding the Cup. Inside is a huge picture of Ben Watson (below) heading home THAT goal.

Wigan were determined to enjoy their stroll down memory lane and manager Paul Cook dispensed with his customary cup of tea, which he has during the opening minutes to settle any nerves before the battle to come.

Cook knew Wigan were in a no-lose situation as they took a night off from their primary objective of winning promotion back to the Championship.

Cook was true to his word that Wigan would have a go and Gary Roberts fluffed a chance before Will Grigg’s magnificent winner.

The Latics were not overawed by City – and Cook got stuck into Pep Guardiola as they rowed furiously over Fabian Delph’s red card.

Rather than just scrap with Guardiola and City over 90 minutes, Wigan want to do it over a season again in the Premier League.

The Hong Kong-based group close to buying the club share that aim.

Latics fans will hope they have the cash to achieve that target and make them dream again.
