Vaping drivers warned they may face bans

-

DRIVERS blinded by clouds of fumes from e-cigarettes risk a ban or fine of up to £2,500.

Vaping at the wheel is not illegal but could amount to careless driving, police say.

Their warning comes as figures reveal more than three million people in Britain have now turned to e-cigarettes.

Sgt Carl Knapp, of Sussex Police, said: “The smoke caused by vapes is a distraction and the consequences can be dire.

“All it takes is a moment to become distracted and potentially cause a crash and, even worse, a fatality. If you are going to vape, open your windows and blow the vapour directly out. Just ensure you are in full control of your vehicle before doing so.”

Sgt John Davis, of Surrey Police, added: “Any person distracted in any way could be guilty of an offence – whether that be smoking, vaping or eating.

“With regards a scenario where someone could potentially be distracted or have reduced visibility, then there is potential for a crash.” Determining what constitutes driving without due care and attention is left for police officers to decide.

A spokeswoman for road safety charity Brake said: “Vaping while driving increases your risk of crashing, causing visual disruption and physical and mental distraction.

“Any activity that takes your eyes off the road increases your chances of a crash and killing or seriously injuring someone.”

She added: “Driving is the most dangerous thing most of us do on a daily basis. It is a complex task that requires full attention.”
