Corbyn’s plan will split party faithful

- FIONA PARKER Edited by Alan Norman Milton Keynes Bucks

LIAM Fox’s claim that remaining in a customs union following Brexit would be a “complete sell-out” is no more than a tactic to denigrate Jeremy Corbyn’s sensible plan for negotiating a “new and comprehensive” customs union arrangement with the EU to protect British businesses and save jobs.

In her recent Lancaster House speech, Theresa May said we must reach a completely new customs agreement, become an associate member of the customs union in some way, or remain a signatory to some elements of it.

Does Fox also believe that his own Prime Minister is guilty of suggesting a complete sell-out?

Shame on Corbyn, he’s badly let down a huge proportion of Labour voters meaning he may just get a bloody nose in a following election – and I, for one, will believe he’s got what he deserves. He might have the younger voters in mind, but only a small proportion of them actually vote, compared to the older voters. I never thought I’d see the day when Labour turned its back on a democratic vote.

I fail to see how some 49% of readers are against Corbyn’s EU vision when he is only trying to save British jobs by wanting some form of customs union (#Madeu think, February 28). Leaving the EU without such an arrangement would cause trouble in Ireland and untold damage to our economy.

The Government doesn’t even know what leaving means for us yet, so how can these Brexiteers say they know what they voted for? In the meantime, we should concentrate our efforts on saving the NHS, and getting rid of zero hours contracts and tax avoidance.

Frank Lee, Wigan

Jeremy Corbyn has sold the electorate down the river. He needs to be reminded that the result was to leave the EU and remaining in the customs union means we still pay but have no say.

The argument that it will save jobs is rubbish. All the pitfalls that are put forward are designed to make us think again, but have no substance.

They seem to think if they scare us enough we will change our minds. No chance.

I am withholding all my donations to the Labour Party unless they change their position.

So, Liam Fox considers that a customs union would remove incentives for other countries to enter into free trade agreements with the UK. Would he rather the Government has to grovel to the likes of the United States and end up with weakened regulations?

There is already a right-wing think-tank lobbying for Britain to ditch EU food safety standards. Is

this really what people voted for?

Joyce Barker, Gtr Manchester

For Labour to try and hang on to some form of customs union is dismissing the majority who voted to leave the EU. This includes millions who’ve had enough of zero hours contracts and privatisation. I’ve voted Labour all my life but they have betrayed the working class for the middle-class voters.
