25% of beds for diabetes within 12yrs
A QUARTER of all UK hospital beds will be occupied by someone with diabetes by 2030, a review has predicted.
Sufferers used up 18% of beds last year, the National Diabetes Inpatient Audit 2017 found
Nearly 3.7 million currently have the condition but this is expected to rise to five million by 2025.
About 60% of Type 2 diabetes cases are thought to be preventable, with obesity the leading cause. Type 1 diabetes is a genetic condition.
Simon Stevens, chief executive of NHS England, is today expected to commit a further £40million to diabetes treatment.
He will say: “Obesity is the new smoking.”
