Doherty: I told the lads at the start of the season: I fancy us to go all the way..
WOLVES star Matt Doherty has been convinced they would win the title since last August.
The defender is now confident Nuno Espirito Santo (below) and his men will secure promotion by finishing top despite Cardiff’s stunning charge.
Wolves started the season with four straight wins over Middlesbrough, Yeovil in the EFL Cup, Derby and Hull.
They are back to winning ways after thumping Reading 3-0 in midweek, when Doherty scored twice.
The Irish right-back, 26, insisted: “I have been saying it since the third game of the season after we played Derby or Hull.
“We played really well and I said: ‘Lads, I fancy us to go all the way.’ I haven’t been wrong yet.
“We just need to keep going the next few games and really seal it.”
Wolves ended a recent wobble of just one win in five games by smashing the Royals and they have struggling Burton in their sights at Molineux today.
The hosts can double their three-point lead over secondplaced Cardiff who visit Derby tomorrow after seven straight wins.
Doherty added: “When we score first we don’t lose.
“So against a team that is struggling you want to try and score as early as possible. We fancied ourselves to get six points against Reading and Burton and have started off with three.
“We have a bit of a break afterwards so we can give everything we have. We are in a good position.
“Cardiff keep winning and are doing well after beating Brentford, which is a tough place to go – I have never enjoyed going there.
“I was quite surprised, I thought Brentford might get something.
“But we play first at the weekend and have a chance to put a bit of pressure on Cardiff.
“I know our results lately haven’t been great and performances haven’t been the best.
“But we are still comfortably top of the table.
“We have lost twice in the last few games but have bounced back.”
