POLICE have confirmed they are treating the death of Russian exile Nikolai Glushkov as murder.
It is claimed the Kremlin had branded him “public enemy number one” after he allegedly stole £90million from the state.
The 68-year-old, found strangled in his London home on Monday, was accused of embezzlement while finance director at state airline Aeroflot in the 90s.
The cause of death was compression to the neck.
Police added that there was no evidence to link the case to the poisoning of ex-spy Sergei Skripal in Salisbury. But Russia expert Alexander Goldfarb – a former employee of oligarch Boris Berezovsky and a pal of assassinated spy Alexander Litvinenko – said Glushkov had discovered Aeroflot worked as a “cash cow to support spying operations”. He said: “Glushkov had a long history of conflict with the intelligence services in Russia. My belief is his death is no accident and he did not take his own life. For a time, he was public enemy number one in Russia. “Even though he served time in prison, he was still considered by many a fugitive. It was not welcome he was living in the UK with protection from security services.
