Enid plight sums up state of NHS

- Anne Wyatt, via Facebook

I was shocked and appalled to read your story about 93-year-old nursing hero Enid Stevens who was left in a hospital corridor for six days after breaking her back (Mirror, March 19). Is this really what it has come to when the elderly are left in soaked their own urine for hours on end because nursing staff are too busy to attend to them?

I bet May and co are thanking their lucky stars that this crisis with Russia has come along because it conveniently deflects attention away from their disastrous austerity programme which is crippling our most precious public service.

I wonder how many people, like me, find it incredible that we have a Tory Government which, for the last seven years, has cut staffing in the NHS to such an extent that it is collapsing around our ears. This was illustrated by your story about the former nurse, aged 93, who was left in a bed in a hospital corridor for six days. And it’s not just the NHS – they have cut defence spending to such an extent that we are no longer a power to be feared, they’ve cut our emergency, police and fire services to the bone, but they have employed nearly 2,000 extra staff to deal with Brexit. Mick Streets Chesterfield Derbys It’s disgraceful that 93-year-old Enid Stevens, who received an MBE for her services, was left in agony in a hospital corridor because of a shortage of beds. This must have been very distressing for her.

Jeremy Hunt ought to hang his head in shame, but instead he prefers to bury it in the sand and pretend there is no crisis.

It is about time the people of this country got together and forced a vote to get the incompetent Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt and the rest of the Tory Government out before they completely sell off our wonderful NHS.

We all read in the Mirror last week that the late great Stephen Hawking was preparing to take Hunt to court to prevent him from destroying it.

Come on everybody, let’s stop him now before it is too late!

What a terribly cruel way to treat an elderly lady who has given a lifetime of service to this country. May and Hunt and the rest of the Tories must be held to account for the dire state of the NHS.

I hope someone makes Jeremy Hunt read the appalling story of retired nurse Enid Stevens who was left soaked in her own urine in a hospital corridor. If he had any humanity at all he would resign. How does he sleep at night? Is this really what we have come to in the UK in 2018? No amount of waffle by May, BoJo or the like can cover up the fact that this kind of treatment is inhumane.
