RUSH: WHAT MO NEEDS IS SILVERWARE, NOT GOALS

- BY DAVID MCDONNELL

IAN RUSH is happy for Mo Salah to break his long-standing goalscoring record – as long as it leads to trophies for Liverpool.

Salah’s four-goal haul in last Saturday’s 5-0 win over Watford has pushed him closer to Rush’s record for the number of goals scored in a season by a Liverpool player.

The Egypt international took his tally to 36 goals, just 11 behind Rush’s 47-goal 1983-84 campaign.

With at least nine games guaranteed until the end of the season, Salah has every chance of plundering a further 12 goals to surpass Rush’s record haul.

And Rush (below) said he will be happy to relinquish the record to Salah, as long as the forward’s goals lead to silverware.

“You don’t mind your records being broken because that means the team is doing well,” he said.

“When I scored 47 goals we won three trophies. I was more pleased for winning trophies than I was for scoring 47 goals.”

Rush, 56, believes the key to the remarkable season Salah (below) has enjoyed is his selfbelief.

“I think it’s all down to confidence,” Rush told espn.com.

“I think when you’re playing so well like that, you go out knowing you’re going to score.

“When you’re on a high, you try everything. You try ridiculous things, with your left foot, your right foot, with your head – everything.

“If you’re not as confident then you’re scared to try things. I think that’s the difference when you’re in a purple patch like he is.

“You’re willing to try everything because you know nine times out of 10 that it will come off.

“You just can’t wait to get out there because you know you’re going to get a chance and you’re most probably going to score.

“That’s what happens.”
