Woman crushed as pallet of bricks falls from crane
Locals claim work ‘not safe’
A WOMAN is fighting for her life after she was crushed by hundreds of bricks which crashed down on to her from a crane.
Shocked bystanders rushed to help the stricken 28-yearold as she lay in a pile of rubble on the pavement.
Witnesses said the bricks fell from a pallet being lifted up to a five-storey development. She was taken to a major trauma centre by paramedics, where she remains in a critical condition. A man was also treated at the scene for shock.
Neighbours heard a “terrifying crash” before emergency services arrived.
Aladdin Rahman said: “Several people were trying to get to the lady and so were the construction workers. It was a hectic scene at the time.”
Locals claimed construction crews at the former garage, which is being redevel- oped into 19 luxury apartments, were not taking “enough precautions’’ during the building work.
A neighbour added: “It is terrifying. This is a high-traffic area with lots of schools.
“They are not taking enough precautions during school times. They are blocking roads during school times and getting deliveries.
“It doesn’t take a genius to work out that’s not safe.” Met Police said of the incident, in Mile End, East London, yesterday: “A woman had apparently been struck by debris falling from a buildingsite crane. She was taken to hospital, where she remains in a critical condition.”
Steve Boreham, of Higgins Homes, said: “Our primary thoughts and concerns are with the lady who has been injured and those affected today. We are working with the Health & Safety Executive, who are investigating.”
