I know what it is like to suffer abuse and hate

- BY EDDIE IZZARD

I HAVE campaigned against racism and hate my whole life and will continue to do so wherever it rears its ugly head.

I’ll work with NEC colleagues to ensure we have a strong plan, with concrete actions to root this out. We must make amends and repair the damage with the Jewish community as Jeremy Corbyn has promised to do.

We must tackle abuse everywhere, in all its forms, and against everyone. No one community or group should be left behind. I know what it feels like to get hate and abuse for who you are.

The power of social media can be positive, too. It has helped me raise millions for good causes during my marathons and to raise awareness of issues such as the terrible conflict in Yemen, the land where I was born.

Yet we need a new deal with social media, which strips out the hate.

Online interactions inside and outside the Labour party and wider society should be governed by friendliness, not fear of abuse.

Our mass membership party is stronger because of our diversity and we must reflect the country if we are to give a voice to the communities who rely on us.

More than anything, I want to make sure Labour keeps its eye on the prize of winning the next election. This is the worst Tory government I can ever remember. We should be further ahead in the polls.

We must get past this, for the good of the people Labour seeks to represent. We must unite so that we can build a Britain for the many not the few.
