PEATY WANTS TO BE A BOLT FROM THE BLUE WATER

- FROM ALEX SPINK on the Gold Coast

ADAM PEATY is setting his sights on becoming swimming’s Usain Bolt.

The Staffordshire pool terrier has come to Australia with complete certainty that he will add to the 26 medals he has amassed in just four years.

Olympic and world breaststroke champion over 100m, Peaty boasts the 11 fastest times in history and a world record nearly one-and-a-half seconds faster than the best of the rest.

Not bad for a lad who, according to mum Caroline, was so scared of water as a baby that he would not sit down in the bath.

Any notion that he is ready to rest on his laurels was washed away by a wave of fresh ambition as he prepared to contest four events over the coming fortnight. “Legacy for me is really important,” said Peaty, still only 23.

“I want people talking about what I achieved in 50, 100 years from now.

“I am on 26 senior medals now, so anything above 50 would be pretty good. That is a massive feat to achieve, but it’s what keeps me motivated.

“I’m aiming to swim the fastest anyone’s swum ever and I’m trying to push it to where hopefully people can’t get to for many, many years.”

Bolt (below) targeted legendary status after breaking the 100m and 200m records on dry land early in his career.

By the end, he had racked up 19 Olympic and world titles and his exalted status has long since been cemented.
