EAT­ING nuts can cut the risk of de­vel­op­ing a dan­ger­ous heart rhythm by up to 18% while also fend­ing off heart fail­ure.

A 17-year study of 61,000 peo­ple and their di­ets found 7,550 cases of atrial fib­ril­la­tion and 3,160 of heart fail­ure.

Eat­ing nuts one to three times a month cut the risk of AF by 3%, one to two times a week by 12% and three or more times a week by 18%. Medics from Stock­holm, Swe­den, said in jour­nal Heart “even a small in­crease” in nut con­sump­tion is ben­e­fi­cial.

Three cof­fees a day can de­fend against atrial fib­ril­la­tion, an Aus­tralian study found.
