WHO CAN CATCH

Pep plans to dominate the Premier League for many years, so his five major rivals need to find answers... AND QUICKLY

-

THE records alone tell a story but also sound a warning to those who would challenge the new kings of English football.

Pep Guardiola’s City slickers not only turned on the style in 2017-18, they had substance in abundance. In fact, in a measure that few in Premier League history can match.

They have already set records for most consecutive away wins and most consecutive overall wins – a staggering 18 games on the trot.

But over the final five games, they can take aim at Manchester United’s margin of victory (18 points) in 19992000. City are 16 points clear of United.

They have their sights trained on the 95 points won by Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea in 2004-05; the 103 goals the Blues scored in 2009-10; and the 30 wins Antonio Conte’s side had last season in being crowned champions. Add to the mix so many of Guardiola’s charges are young and under contract and the message to United, Liverpool, Tottenham, Chelsea and Arsenal is clear – it’s our title, come and have a go if you think you’re good enough. The proud boast of the Premier League has long been that there are genuinely six teams capable of mounting a serious title challenge. But is it possible that the pounding City have dished out this season will become the new norm in England? Our football writers at the other teams in the top six have taken a look at what lies in store and give their take on what those at Anfield, Old Trafford, White Hart Lane, Stamford Bridge and the Emirates need to force their way back into the mix and give Guardiola (left) and City something to deal with. Are any of them capable of going from pretenders to contenders next year?
