Gen­er­a­tion kicked in teeth

THOU­SANDS who ar­rived here as kids as long ago as 1948 were told they may be kicked out. Those threat­ened in­clude the first Com­mon­wealth mi­grants on the Em­pire Win­drush. Those ar­riv­ing were au­to­mat­i­cally al­lowed to stay. That right was cur­tailed by the 1971 Im­mi­gra­tion Bill.

Now new rules mean cit­i­zens must prove their right to be in the UK to rent prop­erty, work or ac­cess ser­vices and ben­e­fits.

But poor record keep­ing made it hard to prove el­i­gi­bilty.
