Dragons coach grateful for support

St Helens v Catalans KO 7.45pm

STEVE McNAMARA says the support of chairman Bernard Guasch has been invaluable in steadying the Catalans ship after a shocking start. After losing three key playmakers in the opening-day defeat at Widnes, the Dragons won just one of their opening eight matches and were adrift at the foot of Super League. But three wins from five in all competitions – plus a narrow defeat against Wigan in which they led 21-0 – have hinted at better times ahead. On the eve of tonight’s trip to St Helens, McNamara (left) says support from above made his job easier as he attempts to overhaul the underperforming French club. The former England coach said: “We’re trying to establish a team and a club that can compete in the long term. There’s always short-term pressure, especially the way the season is structured now, with the cut-off point for the middle eights, and promotion and relegation. “But the reality is what we are trying to do as a club is build a sustainable, successful future. “The club owner Bernard has been outstanding in his approach and what he’s looking for. His support from day one has been first class. “There are so many things we need to implement and change, and everyone at the club is trying to do that to bear fruits in future.” Tonight the Dragons face one of the biggest tests in Super League at leaders St Helens, who have star man Ben Barba available following his injury scare last weekend. McNamara added: “He’s been an incredible player for them.”
