Requests to delay school start up 84%
THE number of parents asking for their summer-born children to delay starting school has soared by 84% in a year.
Children in England usually start school after they turn four, but parents of those born between April and August can ask to delay entry. A Department for Education study of 92 councils noted 1,750 requests to delay until September 2017, up from 916 the previous year, with 75% granted.
The reports says the rise indicates “parents’ awareness of their rights may be increasing and parents with higher incomes were significantly more likely to delay”.
