Stop & search will be used after ‘shock’ knife killings

- BY LUCY THORNTON

OFFICERS will deploy controversial stop-andsearch powers after two teenagers were stabbed to death in Sheffield.

Police have acted following the death on Thursday of a 15-year-old boy, named as Sam Baker.

That “shocking” killing came two days after a fatal knife attack on Ryan Jowle, 19, about eight miles away.

South Yorkshire Police will enforce the special Section 60 stop-and-search powers this weekend.

The force said: “Direct action has been taken to keep communities safe.”

Chief superintendent Stuart Barton insisted the policy would only be used in certain parts of the city.

It is believed that Sam was knocked off his bike and stabbed near his home in Lowedges.

Witnesses said he fled on foot from his attacker but collapsed on a road island just yards away.

A 15-year-old was held on suspicion of murder.

Police said Sam had been having “difficulties” and had suffered troubles.

A 24-year-old man, arrested on suspicion of murder following Ryan’s death, remains in custody.
