The Tory MP was quizzed about his investment firm, which has a stake in a string of Russian companies with links to the Kremlin.
Rees-Mogg owns almost a fifth of Somerset Capital Management, which he founded and which now manages £7.5billion for wealthy investors.
On behalf of its clients, SCM has bought shares in two Russian firms blacklisted by the US which are controlled by powerful oligarchs in Vladimir Putin’s inner circle. Its Russian assets are worth £217million, according to City data sources.
Asked about links, Mr ReesMogg said: “We manage clients’ money. You’re assuming I make money from these investments, I don’t. These aren’t my investments.”
Mr Rees-Mogg has snapped up a £5million Westminster mansion, sparking fresh speculation he is positioning himself to replace Mrs May.
