TIME TO STAND TALL PAUL
Lloris tells Pogba: We need you to step up and be a tower of strength
PAUL POGBA has been urged to step up and become “a leader” by France team-mate Hugo Lloris.
In a challenge Jose Mourinho would no doubt support, Lloris claims Pogba needs to accept more responsibility on the pitch.
The Tottenham goalkeeper says the midfielder is mature and experienced enough at the age of 25 to be a more influential figure.
Manchester United boss Mourinho has become frustrated by the inconsistency of Pogba, who is yet to become the dominant force the club hoped he would be.
He scored six goals last season and contributed 11 assists, but Mourinho wants more from the £89.3million signing, who was the world’s most expensive player when bought from Juventus in 2016.
Their relationship has become strained and Pep Guardiola revealed how Pogba’s agent Mino Raiola offered him to Manchester City in January.
Mourinho dropped Pogba in February and March because he was unhappy with his form, although he delivered a strong end to the campaign with United.
Lloris says France also want more from him at the World Cup after he disappointed in the Euro 2016 final defeat to Portugal.
“Paul is no longer a young player,” said Lloris.
“He has collected experience with his club and with the national team.
“He has this desire to shine with the French national team.
“Will he be the boss? That’s a strong word, but a leader is what is expected of him on and off the field.” Pogba has been accused of having more different hairstyles than good performances and was also criticised for devoting so much time to cultivating his huge presence on social media.
Les Bleus captain Lloris does not doubt his ability and feels he is at the stage of his career when he can establish himself as a world-class star after winning 52 caps with France.
“He has a lot of talent and that label has stuck with him since the beginning,” he said. “He has had a very good season, although people still debate it.
“As a football player and as a football fan, I think he had a very good season.
“He is reaching maturity and he wants to do well.
“But it’s also important that he focuses on his individual performance. This is the best way, to lead by example.”
