GET INSPIRED BY ENGLAND GREAT SIR BOBBY

- BY JOHN CROSS

GARETH SOUTHGATE is hoping his players take inspiration from Bobby Robson.

The England boss sat down and watched ‘Bobby Robson: More Than A Manager’ at their training base with his squad.

Southgate said: “What a proud Englishman he was. What a gentlemen he was.

“It was a brilliantly put-together film.”

Robson led England to the semi-finals of Italia ‘90, the team’s best World Cup campaign on foreign soil.

The film is about his remarkable career and battle with cancer from his early Ipswich days, Italia ’90 with England and then the turbulent spells at Barcelona and Newcastle.

Former England captain Terry Butcher has hailed Robson (right) as the best English manager of all time.

He managed Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho had a stint as his translator and both feature in the film about Robson. Butcher said: “Bobby was the best. I would echo that. The success he had abroad, with the politics of the clubs, having to restructure and rebuild the teams in them as well, without speaking the language – although he would try and sometimes it would be so funny!

“To see Jose there as his translator, he’s not changed a bit – he still looks miserable!

“He helped Bobby and, to be fair, Bobby helped him as well. Pep says – and it’s true – that when it got tough, he really got going. “It’s easy to manage when things are going your way but it gets tough when things go against you – and it did go against him a lot. That’s when he came through and he came through with a smile, dignity and a bit of class.” The film is available now on digital download and on DVD/ Blu-ray from June 4.
