Dentist in 10-day commute to world’s remotest islanders

- BY JOHN JEFFAY

DENTIST Penny Granger has a 10-day journey to work to treat those on the world’s most remote inhabited island.

Her remarkable “commute” takes her to Tristan da Cunha, a volcanic rock in the South Atlantic, with a population of just 264.

Penny takes daughter Elika, eight, with her. They fly from their Edinburgh home to Cape Town, then take a nine-day journey by boat to the island, between South Africa and South America 1,746 miles away. Penny works in Edinburgh of the Seven Seas, the main settlement of the British overseas territory. She said: “It’s a great adventure for Elika and a chance for me to work in one of the most remote places on Earth.” Penny spends five weeks treating locals and Elika attends the school.
