BRILL BRYSON STOPS ROSE RISE TO No.1

-

JUSTIN ROSE saw his bid to be world No.1 fall apart on the back nine at the Memorial Tournament.

The Brit needed to win in Ohio to top the world rankings and was well placed after the third round, four shots off the lead.

Early birdies on two and three raised his hopes, but bogeys at 10 and 17 saw his challenge slip.

The 37-year-old eventually finished at 12 under, three shots off the leaders as the event went to a play-off which was won by Bryson DeChambeau.

DeChambeau received the trophy from legend Jack Nicklaus after beating South Korean An Byeong-hun and fellow American Kyle Stanley.

DeChambeau, who began the day with a one-shot lead, had a chance in regulation to secure his second win on the PGA Tour but his celebration was put on hold after he missed his par putt from eight feet at the last.

The world No.38 carded a one-under-par 71 for a 15-under 273, level with An (69) and Stanley (70).

Tiger Woods began his day five shots behind DeChambeau (right) and made an early move with an opening birdie followed by another at the par-five fifth that brought him to 11 under and within three shots of the lead.

But after a bogey birdie start to the back nine, five-time winner Woods dropped another shot at the par-four 13th, where his drive went out of bounds and all but ended his hopes of an 80th PGA Tour victory.

Woods, in his last start before the June 14-17 US Open, closed with an even-par 72 that left him six shots off the lead and in a share on 23rd place.

Italy’s Francesco Molinari came up agonisingly short in his bid for backto-back wins and a third Italian Open crown as Thorbjorn Olesen held his nerve to claim the fifth European Tour title of his career.

Olesen carded a flawless closing 64 at Garda golf to finish 22 under par, a shot ahead of home favourite Molinari, who had won the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth last week.

The two players had been tied for the lead with two holes remaining, but Molinari followed four straight birdies by dropping just his second shot of the week on the 17th and Olesen birdied the same hole in the group behind to take a two-shot lead.
