HEAD-TO-HEAD BATTLES TO SORT OUT REMAINING STARTING PLACES

-

UP FOR GRABS GARETH SOUTHGATE named his strongest possible line-up against Nigeria – and there are only likely to be three starting places left up for grabs – with two contenders going head to head for each berth. 1. Left side of back three: Harry Maguire v Gary Cahill Maguire, who was nursing a knock, remains favourite, but Cahill’s performance against Nigeria pushed his claims. 2. Holding midfield: Jordan Henderson v Eric Dier Southgate (right) insists he will pick only one defensive midfielder. The England manager is keeping an open mind, with Henderson (far left) likely to get a chance over Dier (left) to stake his claim against Costa Rica. 3. Right wing-back: Trent Alexander-Arnold v Kieran Trippier The Liverpool youngster was given an extended break after the Champions League final and although less experienced than the Spurs man, could edge it if he performs well against Costa Rica this week. SETTLED DUELS Ashley Young is sharper with more match fitness than Danny Rose. Jesse Lingard’s form looks to have given him the edge over Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Dele Alli played himself back into the starting XI.

Southgate’s plans are likely to be further revealed today as it is the final deadline for World Cup squad lists and FIFA are expected to publish the 23 squad numbers.
