Our photo shows suffragette Emily Davison throwing herself in front of King George V’s horse, Anmer, at the Epsom Derby. She died of her injuries four days later. A campaigner for the militant Women’s Social and Political Union, her tactics included smashing windows, setting fire to postboxes and hiding overnight at Westminster. Imprisoned nine times for her activism, she went on hunger strike and was force-fed 49 times.
