Reading the heartbreak­ing article about Garry Newlove by his widow, Baroness Helen Newlove, and her ordeal at parole hearings makes you doubt the UK court process (Mirror, May 29).

The idea of punishment has gone out the window – now it’s all token sentences that do little to rehabilita­te or deter.

Only when the UK justice system finally gives out suitable sentences, maybe everyone will be safer.

But until then the suffering of victims and the heartache of their loved ones will continue. Derek Stocker, Bexhillon-Sea, East Sussex

We’re constantly being warned against fats and carbohydra­tes, but now Heli Virtanen, of the University of Eastern Finland, tells us a high protein diet with lots of lean meat also increases the risk of heart failure in middle-aged men (Mirror, May 30). I see Richard Madeley cut off an interview with Tory Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson because he wouldn’t answer a question (Mirror, May 30).
