‘Medicine, food & fuel to run out’ in no-deal Brexit

TORIES are desperately playing down predictions of a Doomsday Brexit scenario of food, fuel and medicine shortages within days of quitting the EU without a deal.

Even the second-worst projected outcome forecasts the collapse of the Kent port of Dover “on day one”, crippling supplies to stores, hospitals and forecourts across the country.

But an even worse “Armageddon” scenario is being planned for by senior civil servants working for Brexit Secretary David Davis.

Home Secretary Sajid Javid claimed yesterday he did not “recognise any bit of that”.

He added: “I’m deeply involved in ‘no deal preparations’ as much as I am in getting a deal – I’m confident we’ll get a deal. From the work I have seen and the analysis that has been done, I don’t think any of those outcomes would come to pass.” He said he was “confident” Theresa May would have a plan in place for the European Council meeting in Brussels at the end of this month and that it would get a positive response there.

However, Shadow International Trade Secretary Barry Gardiner warned the Government’s refusal to remain in an EU customs union would ensure the UK was a “minnow against whales” on the global stage.

He said: “They will be a 70 millionstrong consumer market against America’s 500 million.”

The revelation came as the DUP threatened to pull the plug on their deal to prop up the Tory Government if Northern Ireland is given special dual EU and UK status after Brexit in a bid to solve the Irish border issue.

Leader Arlene Foster said the proposal crossed a “red line” for her party, whose 10 MPs give Mrs May her fragile majority.
