ENGLAND RATINGS

For the two-match Pakistan series

- BY DEAN WILSON

ALASTAIR COOK: 6

A positive return to form after a horrible tour of New Zealand. His 70 at Lord’s was worth a few more while he was reassuringly solid at Headingley until he got out.

KEATON JENNINGS: 5

On the face of it a score of 29 from his one innings isn’t much to rave about but he looked far more comfortable at the crease than the last time he played.

JOE ROOT: 6

A mixed bag for the skipper who made mistakes at Lord’s with bat and in the field, but marshalled an impressive response in Leeds.

DAWID MALAN: 4

Malan’s century in Perth feels a long time ago now and he could really do with a big score. He got a start in Leeds, but he is nowhere near a reliable Test batsman.

JONNY BAIRSTOW: 4

Not quite the successful move up the order he or England were looking for just yet, but give it time. He could take greater control over the slip cordon which is still too porous.

JOS BUTTLER: 8

The clear success story of the series for England, returning to the side and showing how useful he could be as a No.7 with free rein to score.

CHRIS WOAKES: 6

Despite not playing a first-class match since the tour to New Zealand, Woakes again showed that he is a threat in England and complemented the attack skilfully.

DOM BESS: 7

What a handy cricketer Bess is. Runs down the order, runs as a nightwatchman, stunning catches and he is on the board as a wicket-taker. Big plus for England.

SAM CURRAN: 5

A slightly surprising selection, but acquitted himself well enough in a wicket-taking contribution. He is young and slight, but his skill is good. A yard more pace would be ideal.

STUART BROAD: 7

Despite coming under the microscope in some quarters, Broad bowled well in both games. Could have a bumper summer series against India.

JAMES ANDERSON: 7

Maybe not at his absolute best at Lord’s but still a class above all others. England might better manage his workload to keep him firing for longer.

MARK STONEMAN: 2

Had to be released from his torture after another pair of failures at Lord’s. Probably won’t get another chance but can’t grumble with the opportunities he was given.

BEN STOKES: 6

Starting to get back to his best but his injury highlights how difficult it is getting an all-action all-rounder ready for five-day cricket.

MARK WOOD: 5

Did the job he was asked to do at Lord’s, but he is better than just a bang it in bowler. England must use his skills more smartly.
