BORTHWICK BITES BACK AT GAT: CHECK OUR RECENT RECORD AGAINST WALES

- FROM ALEX SPINK

STEVE BORTHWICK last night hit back at Warren Gatland’s claim that Wales and England are “poles apart” – telling him to look at the record books.

Gatland (right, below) hurled the verbal grenade as Wales moved three places above England in the rankings, with a series win in Argentina.

They are now on a five-match winning run. And the Wales coach’s barb came after their arch-rivals had suffered their sixth successive defeat – slipping in the rankings from fourth to sixth.

“The difference between the teams right now – in terms of where we are and where they are – is poles apart,” said Gatland.

Borthwick (right, above), who worked alongside Gatland on the 2017 Lions management, countered: “Warren can have his opinion, but we also went to Argentina last year and won 2-0.

“And our recent record against Wales has been a good one.

“It was just a short time ago that we beat them.”

In fact, England have won their last FOUR matches against Gatland’s side.
