yesterday became the last of Britain’s Big Six energy suppliers to join in a round of price hikes.

The German-owned giant is upping its standard variable tariff by an average of 4.8%, or £55 a year, for dual fuel customers from August 16.

E.ON blamed a “significan­t rise in the cost of wholesale energy”.
