Tory NHS pledge is pie in the sky

- June Thomson, Ellesmere Port, Cheshire

How can anyone believe a word Theresa May and her frontbench say? She claims she’ll use money saved by the UK pulling out of the EU to fund her proposed spending increase, but all the experts predict we’ll be losing money because of the loss of trade.

Why doesn’t she tell people the truth? Our beloved NHS is in the mess it’s in due to the Tories’ chronic underfunding while she and her predecessors pursued their austerity programme to fund tax breaks for the rich.

As for feckless Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt, he wouldn’t last an hour on the wards, never mind the 13 hours a day that most staff put in.

It’s easy to see why the Conservatives chose to proclaim a £20billion cash boost for the NHS, as it’s an easy number to remember. This works out to be £385million per week, a larger amount than the £350m figure on the side of the Brexit bus. But, as the 100 consultants, doctors and nurses who wrote to the Mirror highlighted, the Conservatives would need to raise spending on the NHS by over 4% per year, not the 3.4% planned, to offset the reduced spending power caused by inflation.

Do not believe anything the Tories say about the NHS. The money is not going to come from Brexit, it is going to come from higher taxes and the Government borrowing more money, so this country will never balance the books.

It seems to me the Prime Minister has made this announcement now as she has made such a hash of Brexit and wants to change the narrative for a while.

If this is anything like numerous other Tory promises, such as energy caps and affordable housing, then it simply won’t happen.

I am amazed at the naivety of anyone who takes anything this Government says seriously, especially when it comes to nonsense about a “Brexit dividend” that has long- since been disproved.

If anyone believes Theresa May’s latest promise with regards to the NHS, they need their head examined. She’s saying what she thinks the public want to hear, but her ideas of where the money is going to come from are pie in the sky.

We are told the Tories are the party of low taxes, but they have even lower standards.

Theresa May has promised the NHS is to get an extra £20bn a year by 2023. Given the speed with which the Tories are privatising healthcare, why doesn’t she cut out the middleman and give the extra money straight to the likes of Branson’s Virgin Care?

As the NHS is struggling, why not have a cap on the Lottery of £5million, which is plenty for anyone, with the remainder going towards the NHS? Simples!
